Share Your Path :: Hunter's Heart

This month, after creating a custom piece in honor of my sister's friend, Tracy, who lost her beloved dog Hunter recently, I decided to offer this design, "Hunter's Heart" on my Etsy shop.

Growing up, our family dog, from the time I was four until I was in my early twenties, was Playful. It doesn't seem quite right that we called her a dog... she was everything that every human being should strive to be.... loving, faithful, forgiving, accepting, tolerant, joyful... forever meeting each of us individually wherever we were on our path.

Playful died several years ago, but her spirit has made an impression that will forever remain in my heart.

In honor of my pets who've died, in honor of your pets who've died, love always.

Share Your Path :: Happy Mother's Day!

video
Very often, mothering thyself can prove the best example of mothering for others.

Here I am, with my sister-in-law Patie, enjoying a girls day out--walking the beach on Amelia Island, near their home--what a life! This was a purely candid video, by the way... we had no idea my camera was operating!

MAKE time for yourself, shine your light, share your path... Happy Mother's Day :)

Monthly Reflection :: A Peace of the Past

When I was little, I couldn't have been more proud of my Dad.

Everywhere we'd go, I'd proudly recite to others the many names he answered to, thinking that he must be extra special because of them... Pastor John, Reverend John, Reverend Beaty, Preacher, P.J., John, Dad, Daddy... Honey (courtesy my Mom)... Seeker of Peace... the voice of many whose stories would otherwise have remained silent.

As I sat listening to the special stories of those gathered, while my Dad accepted his John T. Looney Peace and Justice Award, I couldn't help but feel the same as I had so many years earlier.

Hearing the many special ways in which he touched the hearts, and minds, and spirits of others filled me with pride and joy.

So here's to you, John R. Beaty... my Dad :)

Much love always~B

Weathering the Storm

A Peek Inside the Artist's Studio...

Perhaps one of the most challenging areas of being an artist is deciding when enough is enough. No, not in designing that special piece, but in deciding which tools of the trade are a necessity, and which tools are really only there to fulfill that childhood fantasy of having more.

Quite the conundrum (big word I learned from my good friend Carol Savery). I see so many tools that would fit oh so nicely in my studio... although as time has it's way, might end up dust displayed alongside a few others... left abandoned as I found fancy in others.

Then there are those "fill ins"... those "things" that allow for getting by, yet now quite gaining the prestige of being called an actual tool. Do I fork out a few bucks and buy the real deal, or continue making do?

Tis a true balancing act.

To be financially successful as a working artist, in my book, one must be able to teeter more on the side of "don't really have to have".

I've realized that in having less, my creativity flourishes all the more.

Share Your Path :: Free Jewelry!

The second Sunday of each month, I will be featuring a drawing for a free charm! Entries will be accepted the entire second week, with one winner (including name and story) highlighted on my blog the following month.

This month's theme is on being an ARTIST. We are all born artists. We each have a unique gift, with a story to tell. Although, "life" can very often cloud our artistic path. But if we truly accept it, light is always there to guide our way. I did not realize my path as an artist until my mid thirties. I am now 41. It is never to late to be who we are meant to be.

SUBMIT YOUR STORY, sharing how you arrived on your path as an artist, and when you were able to welcome... embrace the title. Remember, art is not limited to easles... No purchase required!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Last month's winner, for the theme of LOVE, was Delilah P. Baines. Shared below, are the events which blossomed into love on her path. Thanks so much for sharing your warm story, Delilah: I have been in love with the love of my love since I was 12 years old. We grew up in the same church together. I remember the first time I saw him, I couldn't keep my eyes off of him. He was a chubby 17 year old teenager with braces and I was a 12 year old girl with pigtails and princess dresses. I always had a crush on him, but at that time he was too old for me and my family wouldn't have approved. So I kept my crush a secret only telling my mother and aunt, they would tease me endlessly about that. As we grew older, we would speak occasionally. I could never tell whether he liked me or not, he would inquire about my love life but he never directly showed interest. As time went by, I began dating around. Yet in the back of my mind, I knew that he was the one I was meant to be with. I felt this way at 12 years old! As we got older and went away to college, we would occasionally see each other in passing. After several failed relationships, I put the idea of love way out of my mind. One Sunday two years ago, I was debating whether or not to go to church. I ultimately decided to go and I saw him. We caught eyes and I decided that this was my opportunity. I went up to him and said that he should take my number. He called me the next day and the rest was history. We have been together ever since that day and we now have a 8 month old baby boy that I named Salim after his father. I am with the man that I always knew I would be with and I couldn't be any happier!

Not a destination, but a journey... 400 sales!

Today, I hit sale number 400 on Etsy! This has been an amazing artistic journey for me! I was first introduced to Etsy the summer of 2006, claimed a username, dabbled with a couple of sales a few months later, and then laid low until about a year ago. I realized around March/April of 2008 that I could really make a nice living at this, coupled with my juried art show sales. It's been an incredible life!

So many thanks to family and friends for supporting my art, and many blessings and thanks to my loyal customers for helping me live my dream.

Peace, love, & light to all.

Reflective Moment of the Month

In the midst of so much financial turmoil today, it is often difficult to find hope.

Today, we took our daughter to swimming lessons at the City of Akron's Recreation Center on Balch Street. What a joy it was to see the light in Chelle's eyes as she kicked and bobbed and splashed!

I remember, not too many years ago... o.k., it was a lot of years ago... when I was about nine, my Mom taking us to swim in a City pool every summer in Cleveland... for free. This is one of the many rich memories which helped to form my confidence in swimming, and socialization with children from all nationalities and all social economic statuses.

My hope is that recreational programs such as the City of Akron's will continue to enrich my daughter's life, as well as that of others.
A special thanks to Sally Nyburg and her wonderful gift of creativing rich memories through activities!

A Peek Inside The Artist's Studio...

As an artist, I seem to receive a lot of unsolicited comments. Most of the part good, but one repetitive comment in particular still baffles me... "How nice to be able to have such a creative outlet". Or, "Oh, my aunt/friend makes jewelry (as a hobby only)".

Yes, I love what I do, and yes I feel good creating. BUT, IT IS A BUSINESS. Although the internet has provided an amazing avenue for operating a business, to truly make money at it, one must treat it as such. Being an artist not only means being creative, but having the ability to balance, multi-task... be a "jane/jack" of all trade.

As a business woman, I've realized that "convincing" family/friends that working in the studio is not the time to chitchat on the phone, that I am not "playing" with metal clay, was my biggest challenge.

I not only create, but I have to design first on paper/computer, arrive at new ideas to keep my shop fresh, hand make each piece from sculpting to drying to shaping to firing to patina to solder to tumbling to buffing to assembling (making most of my components) to taking photos to posting on Etsy to packaging to shipping to emailing/convo'ing customers for compliments, special requests, lost packages, non-payments...

I must shop for the best design and shipping and marketing supplies at the best cost to keep my prices affordable for all, meanwhile balancing purchases vs. savings vs. investments...

I must market through various resources... Blogger, Flickr, Facebook, Cosa Verde, Twitter, Etsy Teams, etc.

I weekly/monthly review statistics, trying to find new ways of reaching new customers and retaining my awesome former customers...

I have to scout for new summer art show, preparing slides and artist statements and applications... figuring profitability of doing each show (when you are there, time is money too)--balancing booth fees vs. traveling costs vs. food vs. the number of sales I feel I may or should make...

It means being nice to customers or potential customers who are not always nice... (most are though).

It means creativity and filling orders even when I don't feel like it...

It means making time to learn about new tools and new techniques and new materials...

It means having to wear your own designs... Oh wait, this is a good thing!! :)

I must realize that some months I will make less, so therefore I must save for those other months to make ends meet at home...

Then, there are taxes!!!!!

I have not even gotten into making time for Jeff and Chelle, other family members and friends, pets, paying household bills, shopping, meals, cleaning... colds, messy diapers, and tantrums... AND working full time for Akron Public Schools.

Being a hobbyist is easy. It comes and goes as the need for fulfillment comes and goes. Being a business owner is work--no matter how much you enjoy it, no matter how good you are at it. Business is ALWAYS on my mind.

I love what I do, but I am very serious about what I do. This is not a "sidebar", this is my livelihood... this is my life.

New "Peace"

With the quickly approaching new year, three words reign in my thoughts... Abundance, Balance, Joy.

This is such a surreal time; in our world, in our lives.

My hope, as I watch my daughter grow, is that her life will be rich in wonder and joy--despite trying times, filled with abundance and love unconditional, and that she will choose balance through simplicity.

My Guardian

She had been a constant in my life for the past fourteen years. I wasn't looking, but when my sister showed up on my doorstoop with the most adorable chocolate fluffy ball you'd ever seen, how could I say no!

Today, Zoe, moved on. She suffers no more.
Ever since the age of three, I'd always feared loss. My challenge in life has been to trust that although everything and everyone in this life eventually "leaves", I will be o.k. Zoe had seen me through some of the most difficult years of my life.

As my sister said today, I am well on my path... my love, my beacon, my everything--Jeffrey, my greatest little love--Chelle, an amazing studio career.... Zoe can now move forward to guide yet another.
Just a fogged window away--just on the other side.
Love always.

Oh to be...

Young...

My niece, Kaylie Jenne, one of my first loves, here with her first puppy love.

As a baby, I would stare at her and ponder, imagining all of the possibilities along her path. She was so filled with wonder, and glee, and life... much the same today.

It's so hard to see her as 15. In my minds eye, she is forever three... ready to cuddle, ready to share, embracing life with independence and individuality and giggles.

I am so proud of the beautiful young lady that she has grown to be. I often thought about how much I would show her and how much she would learn.

But honestly, the teacher has become the student. I have truly been enlightened.

Love you, Baby Girl :)

I didn't know Santa wore handcuffs!!

Sparkly lights, brightening the dark sky...

Early Christmas decorating, you say? Hardly! Start with sirens out of the blue, officers yelling outside our cozy slumber chamber, demanding that someone get to the ground... weapons drawn, tazers ignited... me yelling to Jeff to get our baby to the ground...

When I first purchased our home, it was 1996. It was a good street, complete with families living the dream, children knocking at my door at the return of each fall of leaf, flake of snow, and blade of grass--growing faster each day with the sun... There were street sales and meetings, and well organized trick or treat.

Yes, I know times change, and yes I also know that crime exists whereever people exist... From here to there, from yonder back... BUT, not my front yard! Lying there, on the cold sidewalk--head coushioned by our not so pristine lawn... big belly exposed... the suspect, vomiting in his beard and in my lawn where my daughter plays... pleading... mighty man, cowardly criminal.

Hours later, while still trying to return to hours before, my thoughts visited the mother in Englewood, California, and the mother in Palistine, and the mother just a few streets over... We share one love... the safety and well-being of our children.

Santa would not be proud.

My wish this Christmas, is not for toys for all of those children that have not, but for the true gifts of love unconditional, comfort and security, and the child-like treasures of spirit.

Today's Daily Om

October 9, 2008 :: Answering The Call :: Taking Responsibility For Your Destiny

There are those of us who believe that our lives are predestined and that we should resign ourselves to our lots in life. Yet the truth is that it is up to each one of us to decide what that destiny will be. While each of us is born with a life purpose, it is up to us whether or not we will say yes to fulfilling it. And just like when we choose what to eat, who to keep company with, and whether to turn right or left when we leave our home everyday, choosing to say yes to your destiny is a decision that can only be realized when you take action to make that choice a reality.

Whether you believe it is your destiny to be a parent, an adventurer, an artist, a pioneer, or a spiritual guru, saying yes to your destiny is only the first step. While manifesting your destiny starts with knowing what you want and believing you can attain your goals, there are then the actions that must be taken and the decisions to be made before your destiny can truly happen. When you take responsibility for fulfilling your destiny and begin acting with the intention of doing so, you not only take fate into your own hands, but also you become the hands of your own fate. Doorways inevitably open for you to step through, and every choice you make can be a creative act toward realizing your goals and dreams.

You begin to follow your instincts and intuition, recognize opportunities when they are presented to you, and seize those golden moments. You also begin to recognize the decisions that may not serve this greater picture and can more easily push them aside. Remembering that the decision to fulfill your destiny is always a choice can be empowering. Knowing you are fulfilling your destiny because you want to, rather than because you have to, can make a huge difference.

When you are freed from obligation, obstacles in your way become challenges to be overcome, and the journey becomes an adventure rather than the obligatory steps you are being forced to take. Your destiny may be waiting for you, but whether or not you meet your destiny is up to you. Your fate is in your hands.

Signs...

Autumn has arrived, and has brought with her the crispness of brightly painted leaves, the coo of a dove, and the discovery of all that nature has to offer; as seen through the eyes of a one year old... these moments I carry with joy.

Here ye, hear ye!!!!!!!

We're famous!!!

I am absolutely honored to be a part of the new juried Etsy Metalclay Team--a group of amazing and extremely talented working artists!!! Of the SEVERAL hundred teams on Etsy, I am even more thrilled that our group has been selected to appear as the featured group for this week in the Etsy Storque! This write-up is a must read! You may also link from the front page of Etsy--lower right hand at "New Storque Articles & Related Items" (my "Tatty" necklace appears on the front page!!!!)!

Among the thousands of artists, displaying hundreds of thousands of wares daily, the exposure is absolutely surreal!

Many thanks to the amazing artist, teacher, and mentor Lora Hart who spearheaded our group!

Life has been good :)

Therefore, new toys were in the forecast!!

I was so very excited when my dapping block and tools were literally delivered on my doorstoop! Anyone who knows me, knows that I set my sites on a particular item, then when I find it, waffle for the next several days, months, years... before actually purchasing it!

Well, I had decided that it was time! A dapping block would allow me to create more interesting pieces with amazing depth and texture! This one, I purchased through the wonderful Gwen, whose Etsy shop you may visit here! Gwen... bless her heart, residing here in Akron, hand delivered this piece for me! Talk about customer service--she's the best!!

...and here's my first "dapping" piece! Oh, what fun!!!!! New designs available soon :)

Eye of the storm... Trip to Windsor

Last week I had a seminar in Windsor, Canada. Something has obviously been going on with the energies of the Universe... Some of which occured last week: Electricity out all over Akron prior to leaving... lost my wallet at the hotel in Windsor--had to cancel all credit cards, etc./was found later by cleaning staff... Had to evacuate the hotel because of God knows what--toting a one year old and everything important we could carry down 25--yes, that's 25 flights of stairs... web/email server problems... came home to a dead battery in Jeff's work van...

Do you think I look stressed in the pic? Despite everything, I think I'm sporting a fairly good front... :)

Daddy's Shoes

Hopefully, Chelle won't be like me as far as the
shoe department is concerned. Otherwise, we'll
all be able to fit into Daddy's shoes!!!! Hee!

Evolution

Today, I am not who I was eight years ago, when Souly Yours was born.

As I have evolved, my art must follow. Within the near future, my new legal business LLC will be Njia Studios. Although, I will continue to offer handsculpted fine silver originals, my creativity will expand to more elaborate handsculpted TRIBAL fine silver originals; which may be purchased at Njia Studios.

Those that knew me several years ago, know that "Barbe would NEVER have posted a makeup-less picture of herself online"!!! Although, I feel refreshed by the thought of a new tomorrow, and feel as glorified as the pic shows... despite my many inner and outer flaws :)

Here's to new beginnings~Peace & Light

Kent Art in The Park!

Seepy, seepy baby :)

I followed through with my threat...
posting this pic :)

Setting up the display...

New designs!

We were off to a "sarcastic and sleepy start", i.e.: the picture of Jeffrey mocking me when I asked that he smile for the camera, and our snuggle bum, Chelle, in need of a bit more sleep :)

And although Mother Nature may have been fickle at times throughout the weekend, neither rain, sleet, nor snow would keep the amazing people of Kent (and nearby) from visiting and shopping!

It was truly awesome seeing loyal and familiar faces and new ones excited about the designs!

Thank you to so many amazing customers and friends for coming out! It was really great to see everyone!

I would like to send a special thanks (shoutout!), to my sister Carole and her kids Kaylie and Noah for watching our daughter Chelle, so that we could make money!

I would also like to send a warm thanks to Lorrie. I feel as though we're old friends--we meet every year/same time, Kent Art Show--she is amazingly supportive of my art.

Tricia and Diane!!! So, so nice meeting you both! You both brought such great energy to the event!! Please do keep in touch!

And, Jim and Mary Umbaugh (Exhibitors)! For the past three years at the Kent Art in the Park Festival, Jim has taken the most AWESOME pictures of Jeff and me, and most recently Chelle. He is THE MOST amazing photographer AND wood worker! What a talented man! His wife Mary creates "have to have" pottery! In fact, we purchased two pieces at the show! I will be featuring them soon on my blog!

BTW, next year, we may be submitting a joint application; as Jeff has received so many acclamations for his fabulous handmade copper jewelry displays :)

Akron residents we may be, but our hearts make a home in Kent every year this time :)

Love and light to you all~Barbe :)

Truth

In our household, we call anything that Momma (me) makes a "pretty". Truth be told, it is really just jewelry. Whether or not it is pretty, is in the eye of the beholder.

In the midst of the most major political campaign our herstory/history has seen thus far, truth can be somewhat difficult to spot.

Well, this "pretty" is one of my latest designs. The "Truth"? Much the same as the real deal... a deficit. But at $26, this one should be much easier to come by :)

Paradox

This modern age of technology has a strange way of bringing out inhibitions in us that would otherwise remain unseen.

We may feel that although publicly exposed, we can still venture out (via computer screen), and keep a bit of ourselves protected from up close and personal, real life public impulse scrutiny.

My sister absolutely, unequivocally HATES having her picture taken at family gatherings and public events. Who are these picture of, you may be asking yourself? Well, they are of my sister, Carole Beaty! Check her out! No, no, no! I know what you're probably thinking, but these photos WEREN'T secretly taken by me via webcam! These were taken by none other than Carole Beaty herself, via Blackberry! Then, posted by said subject, to be seen through the world of MySpace!!!!! Paradox, wouldn't you say? I seem to recall many occasion where my mother would remind us that what we were viewing on the television screen wasn't real.

Does the same apply to computer screens?

Nostalgia... Happy Birthday Kaylie Jenne!

Back when I was young, boomboxes were all the rage...

Well, for my niece Kaylie's 15th birthday (September 1), she received a 19" flatscreen!!

My daughter Chelle is already gearing up for her 15th, trying on my sister Carole's new motorcycle helmet and gloves!

P.S. Mom and Dad, I'm still awaiting my boombox :)

Sweet Abandon

In the midst of the many foreclosures that have occured in Ohio, some still looming... beauty lives.

The house, immediately next door, once called home, is set for Sheriff's sale sometime late fall. Although the blinds now drawn, and the porch light dim... beauty lives.

The lawn finds solace in the welcoming flowerbeds and the unbeaten path, leading to a door whose bell cannot sing without touch... but beauty still lives.

From my studio, I caught a glimpse of this beauty... reaching upward in the morn, gracing the day, shining even for that which would seemingly be undeserving to bystanders... yet, beauty lives.

A sweet comfort in abandonment... the house accepts her graciously.

Life Comes at Ya

In conversation, my sister and I seem to recall swearing that the very last time we'd be caught dead hangin' out in bleachers... wet bleachers mind you, was when we both twirled flags in high school.

Well, a few years later... o.k., several years later, here we are with our parents and my niece, Kaylie.

Ode to nephews!

P.S. Congrats Noah (#56), on participating in your very first "real" in life football game. Playstation ain't got nothin' on you!! :)

Garden Fresh... Mmmmmm

Well into the warm season, Jeff and I absolutely LOVE our weekend visits to Szalays, in Peninsula, Ohio. THE best and ONLY place to gobble corn!! If you arrive there on the right day, you will find them roasting ears with a crowd lined up for days! We usually hoard one for each hand! A delicious lunch all by itself!

Well this year, our first visit was enjoyed with our daughter Chelle.

Besides corn, you'll find an array of scrumptious fresh goodies like Queen Anne's Cherries, mouthwatering cantaloupe, and the harvest green brussel sprouts that I roasted along with fresh garlic and vidalia onions for dinner. I tossed it all together with pan roasted chicken breast, vermicelli, and a dusting of fresh romano cheese.

A true marriage made in heaven!

The Zoo!

If you're ever in the Akron, Ohio area, you have to visit the Akron Zoo! One of the smaller, but I think one of the best zoos around! Right now, they are featuring an amazing jellyfish exhibit--a must see!!! The zoo has changed quite a bit since I was a child.

Although my parents have taken Chelle to the zoo several times now, with Jeff's sister and kids in town, staying at his Mom's (Grandma J) house this week, we decided to take a trip there. On their last visit (when Chelle was six weeks old), we took a trip to the Cleveland Zoo. I must have been clean out of my mind having had a C-Section and galavanting around like I was 20!!!

BTW: We sorta had a rough start, i.e.: Chelle grimaces :)

Barbie Gone Wild!

Saturday, I spent the early hours helping my Mom rejuvenate their flower beds.

From the time I was a child, I've been fascinated with anything nature... be it flying, crawling, swimming... buzzing, tweeting, hissing... slimy or scaly.

Alright, I'll admit it. There were those times (and I'm only telling this because siblings make such credible witnesses) when I went a bit far with my bug fascination... my "how hot is the sun really" experiment involving ants, a girl scout magnifying glass, and a sidewalk. Then there was my "why does a big black ant (hurled unsuspectingly into a spiders web) stick to it, but the spider gracefully (and quite speedily I might add) travels with ease" experiment. Or the, "can bees truly feel anger when captured in a jar shaken violently by a nine year old mad girl?" experiment. I could go on...

It wasn't that I hated insects, nor did I truly wish them harm, I was merely gathering data for what I thought might be the start of my naturalist slash mad scientist slash wilderness worker slash insect farmer career.

Luckily, I've outgrown my "Barbie gone wild phase" and have evolved into a much more peaceful {{insert peaceful chant here}} mode of interacting with nature, as seen in exhibits A & B & C--a Momma spider carrying her young "safely" home, and a potato bug peacefully strolling to meet a friend. By the way, exhibit D is my Mom telling me not to take a picture of her... obviously, I'm no longer afraid of groundings--hee :)

Life truly, truly amazes me. From the smallest, seemingly insignificant forms of life, to the birth of a child. This I've realized even more so after growing and nurturing my baby for ten--yes, I said ten months :)

And thanks to the modern technology of a digital camera, natures beauty can be observed and enjoyed long after the spider has crawled away, the potato bug (roll-up bug as we used to call them) has wandered off to yet another flowerbed, and the lilies have tucked themselves in for the winter.

P.S. Jewelry Care 101 - Exhibit E - Picture of rings on very, very dirty fingers. DO NOT try this at home :)

You've Come a Long Way Baby!

Creeping and crawling along, things are really beginning to take off nicely for me and my art career, several years after discovery! The world of technology has certainly opened a portal of opportunities that I wouldn't have been able to access otherwise... limitless for the small business gal!! Not enough time in the day to tap into all of them! Such an honor! This week, my ring, Bubbling Heart, was featured as a "Friday Findings, Summer Love" on the amazing online magazine,

This is an incredible online community for women! If you get a chance, check it out! And, oh, don't forget to check out the ring at my shop!

First Show of the Season!

For all who were unable to make my first show of the season, it was quite eventful and then some!

Last year this time, I was a very uncomfortable two weeks from my due date! It's hard to believe that time has flown so quickly! Chelle joined us in the setup of our booth, but retired to Grandma J's house, as she wasn't much on business presentation :) A big thanks to Cassidy Genevish (who probably has a complex now!) for trying her darnedest to entertain our little ball of fire!!

Saturday, we were greeted by friendly skies turned rebellious... Sunday, we were amazed by the return of glorious weather and amazing customers from last year!!! So very nice to see familiar faces!! A few had problems finding our booth and asked others where the very pregnant woman from last year was--LOL!!!

Check out the pics of my new booth setup. Jeff crafted my tables from antique wood and copper legs, to match the jewelry stands he designed last year. Thanks hon! :)

I was a soldering fool in the studio this year, as you can see by all of the rings!!

Peace & Light~Barbe :)

One Bad Ass Mo Fo!

At the start of each show season, I usually design
new "display" pieces for both Jeff and me to wear.

Well, this year, in true guy fashion, he'll be sportin'
along one bad ass piece!! ...um, besides me {{wink!!}}.

I took a chunk of fine silver, and said I'll cut you!
Then I carved a skull out of it, and told it we're goin'
for a ride. I dropped it's ass in my firey hot kiln, bitch
slapped it with a bit of patina, wrestled a chunky
3mm sterling silver patina dunked ball chain on it,
roughed it up a bit more, then said don't ever play nice!
Kick ass, take names later!!

All Life Holds

Jeff and the love of our life are having a "Chelle" day...

At the ring of my cell phone, I answered to hear a most
exhuberant, and very first in life, "Hi Mama!!"

That moment, I will hold always in my heart.

Hugs to you, Chelle!

Love,

Mama :)

Meet yourself wherever you are

I found my way to the studio about 6 a.m. this morning. I had some last minute details to tend to before shipping off some orders.

I've grabbled for some time now about investing in squeaky clean new studio furniture--updating and stylishly joining "the rest of the world", or sticking with what I currently have--all which serve their purpose well. I often hear, "What's with all that old stuff?". My studio consists of several pieces of old furniture... things... some purchased while antiquing, others just found--boxes, shoe racks, chicken crates, shelving, stools, etc. I love anything wooden, rusty, and rustic. If it appears to have just been pulled from an 1800's barn, I'll take several please!

I've had an attraction to old wooden objects for as long as I can remember. They hold such mystery. And stories. Stories of beginnings as a small tree. Stretched out to the world, ready for whatever nature had in store for it. Holding steadfast, yet yielding to the change of seasons. So accepting and giving. Then, in death, finding new life as a chair or perhaps a table... Purposed yet again. Seeing more of the world as she transformed and transitioned from place to place... meeting person after person... and the claws of a naughty new kitten, just learning that it's not appropriate to use her leg as a scratching post. Holding their secrets, catching their spills, sharing in family dinners... evesdropping as they anguished over unpaid bills spread so generously across her.

Tucked behind a roll of paper towels, held in one of my many old wooden boxes, I discovered a moth... sleeping, meditating, dead maybe?

She was very much alive, as she swiftly met my invitation when I held open the door for her exit.

A master of disguise, the moth can blend in to the point of invisibility. This is a metaphor for us to use our environment to our advantage, blend in when necessary, adjust and adapt when the situation requires it (http://www.whats-your-sign.com/animal-symbolism-moth.html).

Of all things in life, this is one situation I DON'T have to adapt too... I've joyfully decided to keep my studio as is... for now :)

Choices

As I glance through my studio window, I notice the many
herbs I intended on potting--now 'temporarily' sitting on
top of the pots--I seem to recall putting them off only until
'later'.

For now, I 'choose' to work in my studio.

Often in life, things continue to grow with or without us.

Other times, while out making decisions... choices, we return
only to realize that those things left unattended earlier have
since died.

...and a little SPLASH of newness!

This is one of my latest!

I call her Mermaid Glass... One of a kind beach glass, naturally gifted from nature. This recycled gem is absolutely beautiful!

The only changes made was drilling a hole for the handmade jump ring.

Perhaps the remnants of a sparkling bottle of bubbly, toasted by two lovers at sea??

Where this piece originated? The Sea never kisses and tells :)

Rock On!

Yesterday, as part of a Valentine's Day gift to my guy, Jeffrey and I set out on our first trek to the House of Blues in Cleveland (HOB)!!

The show headliner? Jeff's favorite, Ace Frehley (KISS)! What makes it even more exciting for him is that they share the same birthday... Jeff 1968, and Ace... well... :)

Was a long night for all of us (o.k., just me) "heel-wearing, over-dressed, standing for four hours... " ...but, Jeff had fun!

And, the food was AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

...and so was the staff! An acquintance of mine, Courtney (and Chris), were super resourceful in their attempts for a private introduction with Ace. Although we didn't quite meet up with him, I was able to present him with (through Chris), a custom made 100% fine silver, raw and chunky guitar pic (w/handmade bead connector) leather necklace! Can you say "KOOL"!!!!!!!!!

...hopefully, it won't end up in a trash heap somewhere--I worked really hard on dat!!!!!! :)

Good Day or Hair Play?

It's all about perspective!

Jeffrey says that one of the fun things about having a daughter is being able to do fun and crazy things with gel to her hair (she's going to hate him later!!!)!

And Chelle's got lots of it!!!! ...it'll save her in weaves later :)

Happy Valentine's to You!

Well, it's probably too late for Valentine's Day shopping online, BUT, it's not to late to buy yourself something extra special for that something you don't think you'll be getting :)

My very first "Spirit Trail" workshop!

Recently, I had the wonderful opportunity of working with about 12 youth in
Ohio's Portage County, Skeels Community Center, fascilitating my first
"Spirit Trail" workshop through the Arts Alive Program! Very exciting! The
guys and gals, ranging in ages from four (yes four!) through 17 were full of
energy and overflowing with creativity!

Spirit Trail, is my community based workshop, whereby young artists design
(Metal Clay) to create symbols of their life truths.

These symbols are their reminders to stay true to ones path, with the
knowledge that we all have something valuable to offer in this thing called life.

We had a wonderful time sharing our worlds :)

Trash or Treasure??

Who would have thought wrapping paper could
be so much fun?! Babes! They not only remind
us of the true meaning of the season, but of
lifes simple pleasures--treasures can be found
wherever you choose to look for them ...
thanks Chelle :)

Hum Bug!

At almost 40 (Jan 12), my energy IS NOT what it was at 20!!! ...balancing new motherhood (although extremely rewarding), work and play, is taking its toll!

Perhaps maybe this weekend, Jeffrey and I will FINALLY get our tree/decor up, so that our baby, Chelle, will have memorable pics of her first Christmas to enjoy when she is 40!

Happy holidays from my family to yours!

Heartfelt Holiday Boutique

Unsure of what to gift for the holidays? You can NEVER go wrong with jewelry! And, how rewarding to know that a percentage of the sales from your purchase will be designated to a wonderful cause!

Within the next week or so, Stewart's Caring Place will be launching their holiday boutique featuring a few artists from their annual holiday show, held in November.

Stewart's Caring Place offers various support services to those touched by cancer. You may find out more about this wonderful and much needed organization here.

Look for several of my original wearable art designs for purchase, to be displayed through the holidays!

Convo me if you are looking for something extra special!

Chelle-pillar!

What fun! Chelle experienced her very first Hallows Eve!
We celebrated by helping Grandma and Papaw Beaty pass
out goodies at their house. Auntie Amy, Uncle Scott, and
cousins Sydney and Nicole sent a fun Halloween bib and
cute socks!

Alas!

With the newness of Fall, I've just
completed my last show of the
2007 year! Ahhh!!! Although a
Nov/Dec holiday show would have
been a great way to close the season,
time is short with the arrival of our
new baby girl, Chelle, my best design
yet!

Although, you may still shop 24/7 at my online webstore. Look for
new designs and show listings in early Spring, 2008!

Blog Newbie

Welp, I FINALLY decided to jump on the
Bloggers bandwagon! Though I've never
been consistent with keeping up with
diaries of any sort, hopefully I'll be able to
stick with this one, keeping you informed
of great and exiting things in my life and
business!
